NOTE: Before using your new Action Wrench, please read these instructions so you understand what the intentions and limitations are. Also, before attempting to remove any barrel from your firearm MAKE SURE IT IS UNLOADED and THE FIRING MECHANISM IS REMOVED!   This tool is intended to install and remove your barrel from its action on custom ‘switch barrel’ rifles such as Remington, Savage, Ruger and others. It is not intended to remove factory set barrels which were not intended to be removed after leaving the factory. Factory barrels are secured using various means often using locking compound. They are very tight!   Before using your new wrench, ensure that you have a secure hold on your particular barrel! Failing to hold your barrel using a rigid barrel vise such as is sold by BENCH-SOURCE (P/N 09-G-105), you will be inviting trouble by marring or damaging the exterior surface.   

If you are REMOVING your action from the barrel, first insert the Action Wrench fully into the rear of your action making sure that the face of the wrench is flush with the rear of the barrel. Failure to fully insert the wrench into the action may twist your action guideways! Next, insert the supplied cross bar through the 5/8” diameter hole and make sure that you have equal amounts of the bar protruding from both sides of the Action Wrench.   From the breach end of your gun/action, using one hand on the left and one on the right sides of the bar, begin twisting your action in a counter-clockwise direction. Considerable force may be required! You will normally be able to generate in excess of 50 foot pounds of force using this method.  If you fail to break the action loose from the barrel using this method, you may try ‘snapping’ the bar to increase the amount of pressure you are exerting.   

NOTE: NEVER USE A PIPE OR ‘CHEATER BAR’ on you action wrench handle to gain more leverage. You will bend the cross bar and may damage your action by having un-equal pressure through the axis of the action itself.   If you are INSTALLING your action onto the barrel, first ensure that the inside threads of the action are clean along with the faces of your action and recoil lug if used. Also make sure that the threads and face clamping surface of your barrel are clean and free of foreign debris. Note: At this point, some shooters prefer to apply grease or locking compound onto the threads of the barrel tennon and the inside threads of the action. Installing a clean barrel into an action with no lube will most certainly gall or lockup so tightly that removal will almost be impossible.     Next ensure that you have a secure hold on your particular barrel! Failing to hold your barrel using a rigid barrel vise such as is sold by BENCH-SOURCE (P/N 09-G-105), you will be inviting trouble by marring or damaging its exterior surface. By hand, screw your action onto your barrel thread or carefully thread your barrel into your action until hand tight.   Insert the Action Wrench fully into the rear of your action making sure that the face of the wrench is flush with the rear of the barrel. Failure to fully insert the wrench into the action may twist your action guideways! Next, insert the supplied cross bar through the 5/8” diameter hole and make sure that you have equal amounts of the bar protruding from both sides of the Action Wrench.   From the breach end of your gun/action, using one hand on the left and one on the right sides of the bar, begin twisting your action in a clockwise direction. Considerable force will be required to fully tighten your action onto the barrel! You will normally be able to generate in excess of 50 foot pounds of force using this method. Some users prefer to screw the action down within 1/8th turn of tightening the two together then ‘snapping’ the bar clockwise to increase the amount of pressure you are exerting while tightening.   There is no magical amount of torque that needs to be put on your barrel. Last but not least, every manufacturer has different specifications as to locking compound or lack there of and the amount of torque required to keep your barrel secure. There is no specific answer. What works for us may not be suitable for you because of your barrel twist rate, vibration, thread condition etc.
